Boston Dynamics opens a centre to train Atlas inside a car plant

A trainer wearing a VR headset and haptic controllers teleoperates a Boston Dynamics Atlas humanoid robot as it reaches toward a parts rack inside the Robotics Metaplant Application Center, with factory workers visible behind a safety fence.

Boston Dynamics opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center on 21 September 2026, on the campus of Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia. The centre exists to train Atlas, the company’s humanoid robot, on real factory work inside a working car plant.

The first tasks are logistics: preparing and sequencing automotive parts and ordering components for the assembly line, the repetitive and strenuous handling that includes heavy lifting. Component assembly itself is targeted for 2030. In 2027 the centre is due to move into a larger building on the same campus, at about ten times its current size, and to take on use cases from other industries.

The training centre sits inside a larger commitment. Hyundai Motor Group has stated plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai and Kia plants worldwide, and a US facility able to build 30,000 robots a year. The centre is the part of that plan that exists today: the place where a humanoid learns a human job next to the people who do it.
